About This Course

This course presents fundamental principles of classical genetics as well as an introduction to modern molecular genetics; emphasis will be placed on Mendelian genetics, linkage, gene expression and regulation, mutation, recombination, gene manipulation and biotechnology.

General education & majors

Degree requirements differ by college and catalog year; always verify gen-ed rules and transfer credit with your advisor.

Commonly used as a prerequisite for biology, nursing, and health-science pathways. Transfer and program acceptance vary by school—confirm with your advisor before enrolling.

What You'll Learn

  • Solve classical Mendelian genetics problems including probability, pedigrees, and inheritance patterns.
  • Explain linkage, recombination, and how genetic maps are constructed.
  • Describe how genes are expressed and regulated at a molecular level.
  • Connect mutation, DNA repair, and biotechnology tools to real-world applications.
